Salmonella contamination of pistachio nut products

The Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating Salmonella contamination of pistachio nut products sold by SettonPistachio of Terra Bella, California. The pistachios were distributed to food processors and used as ingredients in products sold under a varietyof brands. Many items have already been recalled and we expect that the number of recalled items will expand over time.

At this time, the pistachio nuts have not been linked to any illnesses but the contamination involves multiple strains of salmonella which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weakened immune systems.

The FDA recommends that consumers avoid eatingpistachio products until further information is available about affected products. The FDA is updating their website with the most current information as the list of recalled products expands. Information is available at http://www.fda.gov/pistachios. You can also access the FDA website through the product recall page at www.shoprite.com.

We are pulling products from our shelves as recalls are announced. If you have questions about any pistachio products you may have purchased, please check the FDA site for information. If a product is not listed on the FDA site, consumers should call the toll-free number listed on the food packaging or visit the company’s website for additional information before eating.

Peanut Butter Updated website message January 22, 2009

The Food and Drug Administration is actively investigating a Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak.  The FDA has traced one likely source of contamination to peanut butter and peanut paste produced at a Peanut Corporation of America processing facility.

Peanut paste is used by food manufacturers as an ingredient in many products including cakes, cookies, crackers, candies, cereal and ice cream.  Products that use peanut paste supplied by Peanut Corporation of America are being recalled as a precautionary measure.

Jarred peanut butter packaged for consumer use and sold in retail stores has not been linked to this recall.

At this time, two ShopRite products have been recalled because our supplier informed us that they contain peanut paste produced by Peanut Corporation of America.  The recalled products are:

  • ShopRite Peanut Butter on Toasty Crackers 11 oz.  UPC 4119003540
  • ShopRite Peanut Butter on Cheese Crackers 11 oz. UPC 4119003542

We have removed these products from store shelves along with multiple national brand products that have been impacted by this recall.

The FDA investigation is ongoing and as the list of recalled products expands the FDA is updating their website frequently to reflect the most current information.

Please note that if a peanut butter containing product is not listed on the FDA site, consumers should call the toll-free number listed on the food packaging or visit the company’s website for further information before consuming it.   If consumers cannot determine if the product in question contains PCA peanut butter/peanut paste, the FDA recommends that consumers not eat it.

The links below will take you directly to the FDA site.

FDA has created a searchable list of products and brands associated with the expanded PCA recall. This list is available on the FDA website at:  http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm

FDA has updated their Web site with information regarding the outbreak. FDA Web site: http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html#recalls
